YOP2013

Hello everyone...Doesn't the week after the holidays seem to be as busy, if not busier than the holiday itself...well, in my warped life it does!

Pal had to go for a recheck with Dr. Stone and while in the office we saw a cute black, bichon frise named CoCo..
Pal loves going to the vet. He always pulls and tugs till he gets a
pet from all the staff. Never had an animal that LIKED a visit to the office..

CoCo and his owner, who appeared to be about 80, sat in front of me.  She was hunched over and every year of her age showed...  It was her hat that got my attention..(well, everyone was looking and wondering about the hat..)
I felt a little like a stalker taking pictures of her behind her back, so I moved up next to her to have a chat.  I've said before that I live in a very diverse community..filled with great artisans..also eccentrics..  So, I was dying to know where, who, what was up with the hat..

Lovely lady, filled with wisdom and funny stories, a retired sculptress.  The hat was a Christmas gift.."A VERY BORING CHRISTMAS GIFT" she exclaimed..  so she turned it inside out and pulled at the joins...to make it a piece of "fiber sculpture."

I know nothing about art..to me, this rendering of an HIV virus is art..I think in terms like:
"Virions enveloped; slightly pleomorphic; spherical; 80-100 nm in diameter. Surface projections of envelope small (surface appears rough), or distinct (8 nm long glycoprotein); spikes; dispersed evenly over all the surface. Capsids isometric (to spherical), or rod-shaped (or a truncated cone). Nucleoid of spherical nucleocapsid symmetric, or asymmetric."  I can visualize all that gobbly gook as a wonderful picture...  where as "fiber sculpture" has me stumped!

Anyway...on to my version of art..  My YOP week focused on using up all the left over acrylic from xmas gift making..
The hat ended up being too small for the intended giftee, so I kept it for myself..I made it because the ribbing was a little different, with a k3, p2 repeat.  I liked it..The original pattern is Peruvian Slouch Hat.

The 2 cowls are from The Grass is Greener.  The sizes were based on what I had left for yarn...One I can pull over my head twice and the other just covers my neck!    I enjoyed working the k1, sl1 pattern.

Finally, and nothing to do with yarn..the football season is coming to an end, the playoffs begin...

I'm a big Denver fan!

I hope everyone has a great week..  We are expecting a warm up...it will be nice to walk on firm ground instead of snow and ice!

  1. I was looking and looking at the hat while reading the story and it made me smile, not sure I'd wear it like that, I'm far to much of a neat and order freak to be able to and if sat behind the lady my fingers would most likely itch to take it off and put it back on her the other way round lol. Love all your makes this week.

  2. I so had to laugh at the lady and her hat. What a fun post to share.

  3. I was reading your post thinking I was going to read you agreed to take her hat and fix it for her, lol. Nothing about that looks like a sculpture to me. Nor did it look boring before she messed with it. In fact, if I were the person who'd taken time to make it for her, I'd put her on my not knit worthy list. Made me cringe thinking someone might try to pull out yarn from something I'd made...major groan. Had to laugh that you were brave enough to take her picture, without asking her...note to self, make sure to look around the waiting room alot...see what people are up to. Maybe she's in the witness protection program and the hat is part of the disguise...lol, now my minds wondering.

    1. What a great post! I'd feel a lot easier about weaving in ends if I was knitting for someone with a perspective like that :) And actually, why not make a handknit your own? Beats leaving it in a drawer unworn. Lovely hat and cowls too :)

  4. What a fun post--and worth a giggle over the hat art! I am not sure if many of us would consider that mess on top of her head, art. :) I didn't pay attention to what Denver did yesterday as I was too busy screaming and yelling for our beloved Seahawks!! We are on a roll and it is one Seattle fans have waited for a long time.

  6. I love the story about the hat. It takes some kind of self-possession to wear that out! I feel like I should be using up scraps - is that a January thing? - but I'm trying to finish up what's on the needles first. We're having a warm-up too! Might even break some temperature records before the weekend's out. It's lovely :0

  7. Clever you using up your bits on nice stuff, the colours on the hat and cowls are lovely.

Love the hat art....I gotta wonder though, did the maker not weave in the ends, or like Sandy says, did she pull them out, makes me squirm at the thought!

Hope it is warming up for you, it's fairly mild here which is just fine by me, despite the rain!

  8. That is an... interesting... hat. I have to say, I wouldn't wear it like that, nor would I be impressed if I'd knitted it and she did that. But if it was shop bought then I say each to his or her own.

I love your hat and cowls, looks like you'll have plenty of warm knitted things to wear this winter
